Highlights
- Third Wave was moving into a larger facility and needed a secure and reliable network that could support their autonomous forklifts and growing engineering team.
- Meter designed Third Wave’s network and installed cabling, hardware, and wired drops within 1 week.
- Third Wave was planning to retain their traditional MSP, but ultimately chose Meter based on better pricing and superior products and services.
Background
Third Wave Automation is a Northern California-based company that develops autonomous forklifts for the industrial sector. Their customers include third-party logistics companies who serve major retailers.
Third Wave was moving into a larger warehouse facility. The new warehouse included a space for Third Wave to test and pilot their autonomous forklifts, and was three times as big as their old facility.

Third Wave could not risk any down time
With a much larger space and an IoT product that requires real-time communication systems, the team was looking for reliable and fast WiFi and networking solutions.
Third Wave was planning on retaining their traditional managed service provider (MSP), who was primarily focused on WiFi connectivity. The estimate from the MSP doubled once they saw the cavernous space with metal racks all over that could interfere with the WiFi connection.
In addition, due to the coronavirus pandemic, their engineering team needed to seamlessly access the autonomous forklifts and facility’s network from their own homes.
“Our engineers come from Google, Toyota, Komatsu, etc. and we work in fairly complex environments. Those folks had to weigh in on what Meter was providing.”
The switch to Meter in one week
After collecting Third Wave’s space, budget, and technology requirements, Meter turned around a proposal in a day.
Meter designed Third Wave’s network, coordinated with internet service providers, installed the hardware (including cabling, wired drops, and Meter devices), and continues to provide ongoing real-time support.
Third Wave’s autonomous forklifts and growing engineering team rely on Meter’s WiFi & network solution to operate their dynamic environments, varying payloads, and changing conditions.
“The estimate and on-site work were completed within a week. The speed was important, but the quality of the solution was paramount. If we didn’t get a sense of quality, then we wouldn’t have done it.”
