Embedded Systems Engineer

Copied to clipboard

Meter provides internet infrastructure for businesses. We build enterprise-grade networks that are faster, more accessible, and more secure. Our full-stack approach combines hardware, software, and operations so that any company can easily set up and run a modern network. Our long-term ambition is to evolve internet infrastructure into a turnkey utility.

About the role

Meter’s mission is to make businesses more productive and secure through providing best-in-class internet infrastructure. The embedded platform team members support this goal in a number of ways:

  • We provide the hardware systems that create the physical foundation of Meter.
  • We provide the operating systems that run on that hardware.
  • We write WiFi and networking firmware and drivers.
  • We learn how our hardware behaves and performs so we can improve it.

Fundamentally, the Embedded Platforms Team provides the state-of-the-art foundation on which the rest of Meter’s product is built. We leverage existing Open Source Software whenever possible. Our users are both internal and external; in addition to our customers, we must consider the engineers who build on top of our platforms and the Operations Team that installs, monitors, and uses our devices.

We use Linux, OpenWRT, Buildroot, C, Python, make, Lua, and Bash. We work on a variety of architectures, including: ARM, ath79, ipq806x, and x86-64. Currently, we work with QCA WiFi chips.
On any given project, team members might debug new hardware, adjust the C-based firmware, write a new Linux driver, create a test framework, prototype APIs for Backend Engineers, and then wrap it up in a well-designed build system.

We are looking for people who are excited to work on complex problems, enjoy learning and working with others, and above all, are kind and ambitious. We are building for the long term and just getting started. We'd love your help.

You might be a good fit if

  • Believe in continual improvement of a product with a strong history of releases
  • Can intelligently debate the pros and cons of using Buildroot vs. OpenWRT vs. Yocto/OE because you have developed products using one or more of them
  • Have successfully upstreamed a patch to the Linux kernel, OpenWRT, Buildroot, or any other major project
  • Have used a schematic, a datasheet, and a header file to determine and fix an error
  • Enjoy converting decimal to hex to binary
  • Redesign the build system so all you have to do is type make when you encounter a long list of magic incantations to build an image
  • Have implemented a network protocol from the RFC or official specification
  • Add test cases to frameworks because of a known bug
  • Improve documentation instead of simply complaining that it is bad
  • Are thoughtful and measured in your approach to solving problems
  • Agree with the statement “feedback is a gift”
  • Like to make LEDs blink. And you know both how and why they do

We encourage you to reach out even if your experience doesn't precisely match this job description. We operate with a growth mindset and expect ourselves and our colleagues to have the capacity and desire for ongoing growth.

  • We want to make Customer Success’s lives easy. We do that by giving them devices that are rock-solid and just work. And when there’s a problem, we have best-in-class metrics and diagnostic tools so we can find and solve the problem quickly.

You might wonder why this role now? Here’s why:

  • As we look towards the next stage of Meter’s growth, we’ll need a leader for this team who can help us scale to meet the needs of our growing customer base using their experience and kindness to delight our customers.

  • Systems thinking: Meter’s vertically integrated approach means that each decision that we make for our platform has direct consequences on how we deploy and manage our networks. We’re looking for individuals who seek to understand these dependencies and can develop backend systems that scale.
  • People management skills: You know how to scale by hiring, mentoring, and managing a team and doing so in a way that is both kind and ambitious.
  • Setting priorities: You know how to set the right scope and priorities to solve the right problems for our customers.
